The South Unit of South Dakota’s Badlands National Park is far less visited than its northern counterpart but boasts hundreds of thousands of acres of grassy valleys and eroded sedimentary landscapes. Much less developed, options for visiting the South Unit (a.k.a. Stronghold Unit) are relatively limited. Most content themselves with driving around its perimeter and stopping at the White River Visitor Center, situated in the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. The Red Shirt Table Overlook on the west side offers a look down at the chalky white-and-pink badlands. And it is possible to hike to the base—and possibly the top—of Cedar Butte from a spot near the visitor center. Yours truly did the former but not the latter, as a nasty thunderstorm was rolling in. The short gallery below offers a few photos snapped while circling the South Unit en route from the Black Hills to the park’s northern reaches.
